NUC Hits the Road
Matchup: Jenkins @ Appling County
Location: Baxley, GA (Jimmy Swain Stadium)
Date/Time: September 5, 2014 7:30 pm
Last Meeting: This is the first meeting between the two schools
Jenkins Warriors (1-1/0-0) (Region 1-AAA Div. B)
2013 Record: (3-6-1)
Coach: Tim Adams 10th Season (41-52-1)
Notes: Last season the Warriors competed in GHSA AAAAA and finished (3-6-1). After the reclassification for the 2014-15 seasons Coach Adams found his team in GHSA AAA which may improve their chances of making the playoffs. Jenkins has not made the playoffs since 2010.
The season started out rough with a loss to the much smaller Savannah Christian. But last week Coach Adams had his team working on all cylinders as they knocked off South Effingham 31-8.
Look for a balanced attack versus Appling County. So far this season they have had a three-headed attack of Arkeem Byrd, Juan DeLeRosa and Eric Johnson. These young men have accounted for 357 of the 549 all-purpose yards for Jenkins in the first two games.
Players to Watch: Malik Benlevi, WR (2015); Arkeem Byrd, RB/DB (2016); Juan DeLeRosa, WR/DB (2015); Eric Johnson, WR/DB (2015); Donsha Lyde, DL, 6-0/330 (2016), DJ Tinsley, DB (2015)
Notable Alumni: Ben Patrick, TE (Cardinals 07-10); Chaz Sutton, DE (Redskins)
Appling County Pirates (1-0/0-0) (Region 1-AAA Div. A)
2013 Record: (9-3)
Coach: JT Pollock 10th Season (66-35-2)
Notes: Coach Pollock has taken the Pirates to the playoffs every year since 2010. As a matter of fact since 2011 Appling County has gone (30-7-1). It was the 2011 season that saw the Pirates make an appearance in the GHSA AA State Semifinals.
Last year the Pirates got off to a rough start by losing their first two contests before they ran off nine consecutive wins. That won’t be the case this season as Appling County downed Wayne County 33-9 avenging one of their losses from the 2013 season.
If you’re a fan of the Auburn Tiger offense than you will love watching Appling County do their best impressions of the War Eagle attack. Coach Pollock will be looking to reduce penalties as the Pirates were flagged 11 times for 122 yards in week one.
Players to Watch: Keelan Crosby, RB (2017); Vernon Dasher, QB/ATH (2015); Tobias Hagins, OL (2015); Allen Williams, OL (2016)
Notable Alumni: Byron Buxton, ATH (2nd overall pick of 2012 MLB Draft); Dexter Carter, RB (1990 1st Rd Pick of 49ers); Jamie Nails, OL (1997 4th Rd Pick of Bills); Carl Simpson, DL (1993 2nd Rd Pick of Bears)
